How to Properly Pack Your Board Bag for Surf Travel

Packing your board bag correctly can be the difference between arriving at your destination stoked and ready—or discovering dings, disorganization, and disappointment. Whether you're heading to Indo, Costa Rica, or your local break on a strike mission, here’s a quick and effective guide to ensure your surfboards and gear are protected and ready to roll.

Step 1: Clear the Board Bag

Start by removing everything from your board bag. Take out all internal components including straps, dividers, and the gear organizer. This gives you a clean slate to pack everything properly and securely.

Step 2: Stack from Longest to Shortest

Lay your boards in the bag starting with the longest on the bottom and working your way up to the shortest on top. This method adds structural integrity to your pack and keeps the stack balanced during travel. For example, if you’re using a 6'6" board bag, avoid packing anything longer than that—it’ll compromise the fit and possibly damage your board.

Step 3: Secure with Straps

Once your boards are stacked, use the internal straps to lock them in place. This minimizes shifting during transport and helps protect the rails and noses from unnecessary pressure.

Step 4: Pack the Essentials in the Organizer

Use the included gear organizer to neatly store smaller items like fins, fin keys, leashes, and wax. Keeping these items separate not only protects your boards but also makes them easy to find when you hit the beach.
